Not many of us know that there is a day called “International Left-handers” Day and is celebrated globally on August 13. Is there any day for Righties? If no, then why is there a whole dedicated day for the lefties? Approximately 11% of the world’s populations are a lefty. But what’s so unique or special about them that they need an entire day to celebrate? Lefties are still looked down upon. In fact, parents force their children (who are lefties) switch to the right. What’s so wrong with being left and what’s so right about being a right-hander? Have a look at the 4 reasons why being a lefty is hard and this might help you in understanding why they need a day to celebrate.
1) Of course, you need to write. That is just so basic, but have you right-handers ever wondered, how tough it is for the left-handers to write? We write from left to right (unless the language is Arabic). Now imagine, a lefty who has to write would end up smearing the ink with his/her hand in the writing process. So does that mean, they can’t use ink pen?
2) A student is already nervous before entering the examination hall and to add to their anxiety we have these chairs specifically designed for right-handers. Why? Are Left-handers not allowed to give the exam or what? I am sure if you go back to your school or college days you can recollect your memories of the desk. If it is a regular desk, then it is fine, but if it is the one with desk arms, then the left-handers are a problem.
3) If you are a lefty, then, of course, you will be eating with your left hand. But wait a second that is considered as a Taboo or offensive for that matter. The reason being that left hand is considered as unclean and how can you eat anything with something which is considered as unclean.
4) If your partner in school or college is a righty and you are sharing the same desk, then you gotta choose the position where you sit. Now, the questions are why, because if you would not do that, you would end up having an elbow war with your partner.
I believe now all the righties know that why being a lefty is hard and why they deserve a day to celebrate.
