Thor is one of the most well-known superheroes of the Marvel Cinematic Universe played by the Australian actor, Chris Hemsworth. Iron Man may be the most popular one and Captain America may be the noblest of all but they aren’t Gods. Thor is. That’s what makes him a class apart from the rest of the Avengers.
Chris Hemsworth became a household name only after the guy featured as the eponymous character in Kenneth Branagh’s Thor movie. Here’s the synopsis released by Marvel studios:
“As the son of Odin (Anthony Hopkins), king of the Norse gods, Thor (Chris Hemsworth) will soon inherit the throne of Asgard from his aging father. However, on the day that he is to be crowned, Thor reacts with brutality when the gods’ enemies, the Frost Giants, enter the palace in violation of their treaty. As punishment, Odin banishes Thor to Earth. While Loki (Tom Hiddleston), Thor’s brother, plots mischief in Asgard, Thor, now stripped of his powers, faces his greatest threat”.
He reprised his role in several standalone and even in the Avengers movies. The sequel to Thor was titled Thor: The Dark World was certainly not the worthy follow up to the Thor movie but was good in parts. Thor fought Malekith was hell-bent o the destruction of nine realms through an Infinity gem Aether or Reality stone but Thor and his forces (including Lady Sif) prevailed and foiled his evil plans.
Here’s the official description for the movie:
“In ancient times, the gods of Asgard fought and won a war against an evil race known as the Dark Elves. The survivors were neutralized, and their ultimate weapon — the Aether — was buried in a secret location. Hundreds of years later, Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) finds the Aether and becomes its host, forcing Thor (Chris Hemsworth) to bring her to Asgard before Dark Elf Malekith (Christopher Eccleston) captures her and uses the weapon to destroy the Nine Realms — including Earth”.
But compared to Iron Man or Captain America, Thor franchise was considered to be MCU’s weakest link until Thor: Ragnarok happened which knocked it out of the park. The direction given by Taika Waititi was masterful and post Loki the constant villain problem of Marvel was finally put to rest by Hela (Goddess of Death) who will be remembered as one of the most bad ass female supervillain in the history of comic book movies.
Moreover, Chris Hemsworth’s underappreciated talent for comedy was finally given justice in Thor: Ragnarok. Everyone loved him. Here’s the brief plot synopsis released by Marvel studios for Ragnarok:
“Imprisoned on the other side of the universe, the mighty Thor finds himself in a deadly gladiatorial contest that pits him against the Hulk, his former ally and fellow Avenger. Thor’s quest for survival leads him in a race against time to prevent the all-powerful Hela from destroying his home world and the Asgardian civilization”.
But if sources are true, Chris Hemsworth won’t be playing Thor anymore. Not unless there is a good script to back it up.
Chris Hemsworth has had little success outside of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. His other non MCU projects include Blackhat (a hacker thriller movie), Red Dawn (action thriller) and In the Heart of the Sea (an adventure drama) – all have been major disappointments at the Box Office. His role of Secretary Kevin was much appreciated in Sony’s Ghostbusters reboot. Although the movie didn’t do as well as everyone hoped it would, Chris Hemsworth’s acting chops as Kevin were noticeable and significant.
The Super Bowl saw something peculiar happening involving Chris Hemsworth. He featured in several fake trailers titled ‘Dundee’. The trailers were widely well received so there are even talks of turning the fake trailer into an actual movie.
Hemsworth has played Thor in a number of Marvel Movies. His chiseled body and majestic physique made him a heartthrob for all. Yet Disney has been forced to let Hemsworth go. After the enormous success of the MCU movies, the actors have become well-known faces. As a franchise grows stronger, the same happens with the fee of its core cast members. In order to keep the budgetary costs to a minimum, the cast will have to be let go at some point.
Avengers 4 will see such a phenomenon take place first hand. Many actors will be leaving the MCU after Avengers 4, including the God of Thunder. In an interview with Australian Breakfast show Sunrise, Hemsworth explains his departure from the MCU movies:
My contract’s coming to an end, we’ve just finished the last two Avengers. Who knows what the future holds.
While everyone might be saddened by the fact that Chris Hemsworth, the one true king of Asgard, will be leaving the Marvel Cinematic Universe, there is still hope for him to return. As Chris Hemsworth words help explain the fans that nothing is set in stone yet. He goes on to add:
“We felt like we reinvented the last one in a big way. It felt refreshed and re-energized. We might have a conversation if there’s another great script that comes along. But at the moment that’s it.”
The current version of MCU as we know it will be coming to an end with the release of Avengers 4. Kevin Feige claims the upcoming movies will have something big in store for Earth’s mightiest heroes, something so huge that it will change the very fabric of reality within the Marvel Universe.
A new generation of heroes will take over when Chris Evans, RDJ, and the rest of the heroes will leave the MCU for good. It is still not confirmed if Chris Hemsworth will return as Thor in Marvel Phase 4. We are not even sure if he is even interested in playing the role anymore.
Chris Hemsworth is aiming to take a reprieve from the acting world. He has had several blockbusters under his belt. Those will do for now. He was due to star in J.J. Abrams Star Trek reboot but with Quentin Tarantino taking over and proposing an R-Rated version of the movie to be filmed, expecting Chris Hemsworth to assume his role of George Kirk is a fool’s dream now. He has also expressed interest in playing the role of James Bond but is not sure if he will bag the role.
For now, enjoy the glory of the Hemsworth as he makes his way to Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War. Also, it is confirmed that he will show up in Avengers 4 too. The movie ‘Avengers Infinity War” will release on May 4th, 2018. The Official Synopsis reads:
“Iron Man, Thor, the Hulk and the rest of the Avengers unite to battle their most powerful enemy yet — the evil Thanos. On a mission to collect all six Infinity Stones, Thanos plans to use the artifacts to inflict his twisted will on reality. The fate of the planet and existence itself has never been more uncertain as everything the Avengers have fought for has led up to this moment”.
There are two more official synopsis released by Marvel studios for Avengers Infinity War, read them below:
“As the Avengers and their allies have continued to protect the world from threats too large for any one hero to handle, a new danger has emerged from the cosmic shadows: Thanos. A despot of intergalactic infamy, his goal is to collect all six Infinity Stones, artifacts of unimaginable power, and use them to inflict his twisted will on all of reality. Everything the Avengers have fought for has led up to this moment – the fate of Earth and existence itself has never been more uncertain”.
“An unprecedented cinematic journey ten years in the making and spanning the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe, Marvel Studios’ “Avengers: Infinity War” brings to the screen the ultimate, deadliest showdown of all time.
